Pentecost, Flowers & Graduation
Pentecost Sunday is celebrated fifty days after Easter Sunday and ten days after the Ascension of Jesus. It is when the Holy Spirit descended on those in the Upper Room, turning them from frightened disciples to emboldened Apostles. That day Peter preached to the people and over 3,000 people were Baptized in the name of Jesus! Pentecost is not only when flames of fire appeared over the heads of the Apostles but is also the birthday of the Church. The Holy Spirit is often represented by wind, flames or a dove.
An Italian tradition is to scatter rose leaves from the ceiling during Mass to represent the miracle of the fiery tongues. In France, trumpets are blown during Mass to recall the sound of the Holy Spirit. In the US we decorate with red flowers and banners. The priest always wears red and parishioners are invited to wear red also! Click above to read about the coming of the Holy Spirit in Acts 2:1- 41.
